Addae-Mensah: 'Sad we can’t start league'

The Group Chief Executive of Databank, Kojo Addae-Mensah, has bemoaned the late start of the Ghana Premier League, describing it as sad.

“I am saddened that we are unable to start the league,” he told Class FM in an exclusive interview.

Mr Addae-Mensah, who is a football fanatic and a die-hard supporter of Kumasi Asante Kotoko, noted that there is more to the delay of the league than the case of Techiman FC.

According to him, sponsorship and contractual issues may be the reasons preventing the league from starting.

“Initially, I thought it was because of the Techiman FC case and all, but it’s looking like there is more to it than that. It’s looking like there are sponsorship issues that are also preventing the league from starting. There are contractual issues there, so, it’s really sad that the league is not starting because I am a big advocate and the fan of the local league. I don’t think the league is dead; people think it’s dead, but it has potential,” he noted.

The league was dealt a heavy blow when First Capital Plus Bank, suspended its contract indefinitely with the Ghana Premier League ahead of the 2015-16 season.

The bank signed a five-year deal with the Ghana Football Association in January 2014, worth $10 million in total, and $2 million annually, but it opted to halt all actions related to the league after the company reached a decision to undergo restructuring.

It is unclear when the Ghana Premier League will kick off after Ashgold emerged winners in the 2015-2016 season.
